Introduction

A wastewater treatment facility in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin was recently renovated to extend the lifespan and increase the capacity to 5.5 million gallons per day with peak flow of 12 million gallons for some of the key components of the facility.

The improvements made in this $7.2 million expansion project included a secondary clarifier, a chlorine disinfection system featuring an ultraviolet disinfection system, and more bio-solids storage. For this project, all new materials had to have extended years of functionality with no maintenance problems of conventional products.

Benefits of Strongwell Products

For the 37-year-old facility, Strongwell products were specified by Donohue and Associates for three major components of this structure: stairways, walkways and basin covers. Donohue and Associates selected Strongwell products based on its earlier successful installations involving Strongwell materials. Low maintenance walking surfaces including both outdoor and indoor surfaces were made from DURADEK®.

Fabricated EXTREN® stairways and 2" x H" handrails were deployed to facilitate access to the mezzanine areas (Figure 1). COMPOSOLITE® was utilized to fabricate the covers for the large UV basin (20' x 50') with some panels measuring 24" x 60", which cannot be handled by comparable aluminum covers. In this case, FRP yielded more structural support, corrosion resistance and value. Each of the panels also consisted of a lift handle to facilitate removal and replacement of the covers (Figure 2).

STAAB Construction was much happy with the simplicity and rapidity of the installation process. According to Tom Steinbach, Operations Manager for Oconomowoc WWTF, the successful performance of Strongwell products in several earlier capital projects, their long term durability, workmanship, safety features, and aesthetic value are what keep the plant management coming back to the Strongwell brand. The technical data of this project is summarized as follows:

Product : Wastewater Treatment Facility
Process : Pultrusion, Fiberglass Fabrication
