| Bedzed, the brain child of Physics professor Bill Dunster, is the UK’s first carbon neutral neighbourhood which makes a zero contribution to global warming. The project which features 82 homes boasts an impressive list of eco-friendly attributes including solar panels, rainwater recycling, south-facing homes to optimise sun trapping and triple glazing etc. Even the majority of the materials are recycled and sourced from within a 35 mile radius of the development in order to keep petrol usage to a minimum. Apart from the obvious advantages to the environment, the development features homes which are surprisingly stylish and modern in design. Sustainable wood flooring, ‘sky gardens’ and double height room spaces compliment the individual living space whilst the overall neighbourhood design caters for social, rentable and private housing at affordable prices. The Bedzed project was funded The Peabody Trust, a London based Housing Association and BioRegional, an eco-investment group. A construction materials report, explaining how the Bedzed project reduced environmental impact by 20 -30% has now been published by BioRegional.
