Winner announced for University of Oxford (Radcliffe Infirmary) Competition

PC has won the competition relating to the redevelopment of the Radcliffe Infirmary
site, Oxford.
The relocation of the current hospital functions (circa 3Q2007) will provide
the University of Oxford with a unique opportunity to develop up to 10.5-acres
of this prime city centre site, to meet its anticipated growth in educational
and research activities over the next ten years.
The University was seeking exceptional architect-led teams, capable of developing
a masterplan within a highly sensitive conservation area.
Sixty architectural practices (from across the UK, Europe, Australasia and
North America) submitted Expressions of Interest to the first phase of the competition.
Rafael Viñoly’s design proposal was selected from a prestigious shortlist that
included: Dixon Jones Ltd; HOK International Ltd and Hopkins Architects.
The RIBA Adviser, Jim Chapman
(EDAW plc), commented: 'All four teams' enthusiasm for the project was obvious
from their presentations to the Jury Panel. Quality of design and ability to
work with the University were key criteria in the evaluation of the proposals
and making the final selection. Rafael Viñoly’s approach excited the Jury Panel
- the team responded well to the complex site and the evolving University brief’.
Rafael Viñoly will now go on to develop his proposals to help the University
achieve its vision for the redevelopment of the Radcliffe Infirmary site.
