The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded LEED Gold certification to the Centennial Hall, which is a recently constructed SUNY ESF dormitory.
The Centennial Hall observation tower was crafted using 55’ Douglas fir glulam timber posts with traditional mortise and tenon design. The attached pergola/bicycle shelter was crafted of Western Red Cedar.
New Energy Works Timberframers crafted and elevated the dormitory observation tower, which provides residents and students an exclusive space to assemble, study, and relax with panoramic views in the campus.
During every semester, more than 400 students have been hosted in the Centennial Hall at SUNY ESF. Holmes King Kallquist designed this hall, which is the campus first dormitory. All the constituents for timber frame, including solid Douglas fir beams and 55’ glulam posts of the tower were offered by New Energy Works Timberframers. The structure, which was crafted by utilizing standard tenon and mortise design, helps in stabilizing the new dormitory’s steel and concrete.
According to Brian Mosch, New Energy Works Timber Framers’ General Manager, the company had collaborated with SUNY ESF to build the dormitory, concentrating on environmental and sustainability stewardship. A structure that was efficient and eco-friendly was crafted by the company with the help of its LEED AP staff members and sustainably harvested timbers. The company is delighted that the Centennial Hall has received the LEED Gold certification, Mosch added.
An attached exterior trellis that was crafted from Western Red Cedar, besides the observation tower, provides shelter and shade for benches and bikes. The company built this Centennial Hall by means of sustainable building materials, including the Cedar timbers and Douglas fir. Timber framing represents an efficient construction process. This method along with prefabricated modular units reduces wastage. A tight construction plan was maintained for this dormitory project.
