Corus and the BCSA have today
announced a shortlist of 24 projects for the 2008 Structural Steel
Design Awards (SSDA). This year’s shortlisted projects come
from around the UK and as far afield as Barbados, and reflect the
innovative application of steel across a wide range of construction
sectors including commercial and leisure, industrial, education,
residential, bridges as well as landmark public art.
The confirmed 2008 SSDA shortlist includes:

The SSDA Awards recognise the high standards of structural and
architectural design attainable in the use of steel and its potential
in terms of efficiency, cost effectiveness, aesthetics and innovation -
rewarding outstanding projects to stand as an example to others.
David Lazenby CBE, Chairman of the Judging Panel comments:
“As judges we regard the SSDA awards as a showcase for how
constructional steelwork plays a vibrant, forward thinking and
innovative part in the success of the construction industry. Instituted
in 1969, this year heralds the 40th Anniversary of the SSDA Awards.
Bearing this in mind, the outstanding range and standard of the 2008
shortlist has certainly given us something to celebrate.
Lazenby continues: "Diverse as the shortlisted projects this
year are, regardless of whether a project has used five or 30,000
tonnes of steel, each one stands as testament to the skills and
determination of highly motivated project teams working to achieve
noteworthy results. Architects, structural engineers, main contractors,
steelwork contractors and developers have all worked together to
deliver striking additions to our built environment, on time and on
budget – satisfying clients and delighting the
public.”
The winners of the 2008 SSDA Awards will be announced at a
black tie award ceremony taking place on 08 July 2008 at the Victoria
and Albert Museum. The event will also include a retrospective of
winning entries since 1969 to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the
SSDA Awards.
