Causes of construction accidents

An analysis of the causes of construction accidents with a view to the role of designers in preventing such accidents has been published by The Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

New duties for designers were introduced in The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 but many designers continued to believe that there was little they could do to prevent accidents occurring during construction.

The HSE believed otherwise and examined actual construction incidents and how design changes could have made a difference. The report concludes that the Regulations are sound and that designers should do more to prevent construction accidents.

The report is available online.
