Preventing Corruption on Construction Projects

Published on July 28, 2005 at 1:31 AM

Transparency International (TI) is undertaking an international initiative aimed at preventing corruption on construction projects.

The initiative is based on the premise that corruption on construction projects can be avoided if all parties put into place the necessary preventive measures. This requires coordinated international action by governments, banks, export credit agencies, project owners, contractors, consultants, insurers and other relevant parties.

Corruption in the industry has been given considerable recent prominence by the Commission for Africa Report, and the G8 Gleneagles Summit, both of which call for concerted action. In order to support this industry initiative, TI has produced a new (March 05) series of reports and business tools which deal specifically with preventing corruption on construction projects. An index of these reports and tools which includes a brief summary of each report's and tool's contents is available to download here.

TI's Global Corruption Report 2005, includes a reasonably detailed action plan for the industry. The report, "Risk assessment and proposed actions for construction and engineering companies and consulting engineering firms" is also available here.

All reports and tools can be accessed on TI's web-site www.transparency.org
