STV Provides Design Services to Lockheed Martin for LEED Gold Certified Cyber Center of Excellence

STV, a leading planning, design and construction management firm, recently supported long-standing client Lockheed Martin (LMC) in the opening of a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility in Annapolis Junction, MD, geared towards providing LMC’s customers with cutting-edge cyber mission technology.

The Cyber Center of Excellence is a 56,000-square-foot facility complete with secure work areas, laboratories, training and conference rooms, office and administrative spaces, and data closets. STV, under the guidance of senior project manager Steven Rothenberger, Associate AIA, LEED® AP, BD+C, provided a range of architectural and interior design, and engineering design services including structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The firm also provided extensive post-design and LEED® administration/documentation/implementation services. The project was just given a LEED® Gold Certification.

“This project was a success because of the dedication of many,” Rothenberger said. “We truly had a great group of professionals on this project; everyone worked very well together and deserves a lot of credit.”

During the design phase, STV’s project team started with floor plan and test fit concepts and gradually developed the final design to maximize everyone’s capabilities. The secure work areas and laboratories contained in the building required a very complex design in order to meet industry standards and comply with federal Department of Defense (DoD) requirements.

The launch in 2009 of the U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM) – a centralized command of national cyberspace operations that organizes existing cyber resources and synchronizes defense of U.S. military networks – as well as the presence of the National Security Agency and the Defense Information Systems Agency, all out of the Fort Meade, MD, area, has led to the growth of LMC services in this region. The Cyber Center represents a strategic investment by LMC to better position itself to support its customers’ growing cyber needs, as well as better facilitate collaboration across the DoD and the federal intelligence community as a whole.

STV’s support of the Cyber Center is just the latest example of the firm helping LMC meet its
evolving needs. The firm has been a partner on various LMC initiatives for more than 25 years.
In the late 1990s, STV provided planning, design and construction management services for a
new Communications and Power Center for LMC’s Space Systems Division in Newtown, Bucks
County, PA. More recently, STV planned, designed and managed construction of a 19,000-
square-foot high bay addition at the facility, which achieved LEED® Silver Certification. The
firm also designed a LEED® Gold certified high-tech conference center, named “The Patriot
Center,” for LMC during the same timeframe. STV continues to serve a number of LMC
business units at multiple sites across the country.

Since its earliest predecessor firm opened more than 100 years ago, STV has become a leader inproviding architectural, engineering, planning, environmental services and construction
management services for buildings and facilities, transportation systems, energy and
infrastructure. STV is ranked 40th in Engineering News-Record’s Top 500 Design Firms survey.
STV is 100 percent employee-owned.
