Tianjin Welcomed by Bluescope Steel

BlueScope Steel has welcomed a high level delegation from China to discuss major building and construction projects in the lead up to the 2008 Olympic Games.

The delegation, from the Tianjin municipal government, visited the Company's head office on 19 June, and met with Managing Director and CEO Kirby Adams and other Company executives.

BlueScope Steel has a BlueScope Buildings welded beam manufacturing plant at Tianjin, as well as a rollforming plant at nearby Langfang.

BlueScope Steel is providing steel products for a range of building and construction projects in Tianjin, including LYSAGHT® cladding for the Tianjin Olympic Stadium. Tianjin will host a number of events during the 2008 Olympic Games, including soccer preliminary finals and swimming.

The Company has signed two other contracts for Olympic venues - the Beijing Olympic Fencing Training Centre and the Beijing Olympic Swimming Training Centre - and is bidding for a number of other Olympic projects.

Other projects undertaken by BlueScope Buildings in Tianjin include a John Deere manufacturing plant, expansion of a Toyota manufacturing plant, and nine facilities for the Home World retail chain.

The six-member delegation was led by Mr Song Pingshun, Chairman of the Tianjin Committee of the Chinese People's Consultative Conference and a senior adviser to the Tianjin People's Government. The delegation also included representatives from the Tianjin Economic - Technological Development Area (TEDA) and the Tianjin Port Free Trade Zone.

The delegation commented favourably on BlueScope Steel's products and extensive manufacturing and sales network in China. Delegates were enthusiastic about the potential for steel building projects to play a greater role in the redevelopment of the built environment in Tianjin.
