Wrecking Corporation
of America, which has provided demolition services to major industrial,
commercial, and government clients in the Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland
metropolitan areas for more than 30 years, has won a contract for demolition
of the 750,000-square-foot Coliseum Mall in Hampton Roads. The general contractor
for the project is Hoar Construction of Alabama.
"The project involves the demolition of a large mall structure plus recycling
of the steel framing and on-site crushing of all concrete and masonry materials,"
said Terry Anderson, Wrecking Corp executive VP. "We will raze two anchor
stores, JC Penney and Burlington Coat Factory, plus 100 or so specialty stores
and restaurants. I anticipate that the entire job, scheduled to begin this month,
will be completed in about six months."
The only building to remain open is the current Macy's store. Plans are to
construct a new, updated mall, Peninsula Town Center, on the site. The original
mall opened in 1973, and an addition was constructed in 1976.
