CFRP Tape Wrap to Strengthen Bridge Beams

CFRP Tape Wrap To Strengthen Bridge Beams

A new form of bridge strengthening technique which aims to provide a more convenient alternative to traditional steel plate reinforcement is being developed by a team of researchers at Cambridge University. The technique utilises pre-tensioned carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) tape wrap to increase the shear resistance of under-reinforced concrete beams and columns.

The two year study has been funded by a £30,000 Brian Mercer Postdoctoral Award for Innovation from the Royal Society and by Swiss federal testing authority EMPA.
