Testing Stonework Structures Against Earthquakes


Stonework constructions, designed in the simple and traditional manner recommended by all seismic standards, can  be modelled as "Shear buildings" with one single degree of freedom per floor by using the method of rigid planes.  This  method, despite being relatively simple, yields far better results than those obtained by other methods which claim to be more sophisticated.  By entering all the design data into  a simple spreadsheet, the latter can analyse all the wall elements of each floor and automatically calculate their resistance to stress arising from an incidental earthquake.   9 refs.
