Fire Test For Wall Ties


A diverse range of ties are used in buildings to link laterally loaded cladding masonry to either inner leaves of loadbearing masonry or to frame structures.  Also, tie failures require the use of remedial tie systems.  Many of these devices have fixing mechanisms which are sensitive to heat.  However, there is very little data in the public domain on the performance of ties in fire conditions. Resistance to fire is one of the essential requirements of the Construction Products Directive.  Fire performance data would be very helpful for designing in accordance with EN1996-1-2.  A possible test method for individual ties which, is described when combined with data from element (e.g. wall) tests, would facilitate design for a wide range of tie fixing systems.  The test methodology described might  be extended in future to other products such as general fixings and straps.  11 refs.
