The importance of well-executed tile installations in the promotion of ceramic tiles in all countries is briefly outlined. It is argued that the skilled tiler, one whose work makes it to the pages of glossy brochures and magAzines, deserves to be promoted along with the designer and the tile manufacturer. However, the skilled operatives that perform such work are largely un-named and unrecognised. A case is put forward for greater involvement of tile industry manufacturers and tile industry associations in the promotion of excellence in tile installation, as the whole industry benefits. Involvement in an existing international tiling skills competition is promoted, along with guidance in how individuals and organisations can become involved in such a competition. In an initiative arising from the Round Table conducted at Qualicer 2000 into the promotion of specialised training for construction professionals and employees of the tile industry, a web site focusing on the promotion of training for the whole of the ceramic tile industry, is described. All persons with something to contribute to the design and promotion of structured training for the tile industry are encouraged to become involved by visiting the site. 2 refs.
