Critical Axial Loads For Transversely Loaded Masonry Walls


The buckling behaviour of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls subjected to out-of-plane lateral loads is described.  Numerical solutions for critical load and out-of-plane bending is discussed.  A parameter study of the laternal load capacity of URM walls indicates that stability under transverse loads is the most likely failure mode for a wide range of common wall heights and load intensities.  An experimental investigation on the stability of slender masonry walls is outlined.  12 refs.
