Structural Behaviour Of Brick Lintels With Ungrouted Perpend Joints In The Masonry Above

Summary

The German standards such as DIN 1053 do not take into account that most of the vertical joints within masonry situated above brick lintels are left unfilled with mortar for economic and technical reasons.  A realistic model of the structural behaviour of such systems is described which considers the interaction of a bracing element on the top, the lintel and masonry bricks with ungrouted perpend joints.  The loadbearing capacity of the structure is assessed.  7 refs.
