Closed-circuit television (CCTV) may develop to use digital Ethernet technology, according to this article. The author argues that security applications will increasingly adopt digital technologies, and that security systems such as surveillance systems and video and alarm transmissions will be more pc-based in future. Explains the background to Ethernet CCTV (also known as video-over- Internet Protocol, networked video and Internet Protocol video surveillance) how it can use existing structured cabling, and methods of linkage to digital cameras. The article also considers some of the system's disadvantages, such as installation, management of the system, and cost.
