Impact drying - an option for the rapid drying of roof tiles

Summary

Impact air flow is a promising option for the rapid drying of flat-shaped heavy clay products.  The technical implementation of impact drying and its effects on the properties of the ceramic body are discussed.  The results of tests on roofing tiles obtained using a mobile test dryer  and the significance of this method of drying for field operation are described.  The advantages of impact air flow compared to the common drying process with lateral air flow around the tiles are: the properties of the fired tiles are not adversely affected by rapid drying; the plant parameters  and climatic curves must be adjusted to the geometry and material; drying is usually completed in around a tenth of the conventional drying time (pressed interlocking roofing tiles in 3-5 h; plain tiles in 2-4 h).  Lower operating costs and substantially reduced investment costs can be realised.  10 refs.
