The use of bamboo and timber poles for construction applications is discussed and illustrated by a number of examples. Poles ( young trees removed as thinnings in plantations ) are 50-150 mm in diameter and up to 15 m in length. They are strong and inexpensive, and their lack of durability can they overcome by suitable treatment. Bamboo grows rapidly, and provides strength with low weight. Its low durability can the overcome by specification and design. Examples of use include: scaffolding, roof trusses, bridges, jetties, third world and luxury housing.
