Contract guide for the specification of ceramic wall and floor tiles

Summary

This guide enables users to make an informed choice when specifying wall and floor tiles.  Technical standards (tile product; adhesives and grouts; fixing and workmanship) currently in operation in the UK are outlined.  Ceramic tiles are classified according to production method (dust pressed or extruded), and the level of water absorption is measured as a percentage.  They can be glazed or unglazed, and must conform to the requirements of BS 6431.  Floor tiles may be terracotta, vitrified and semi-vitrified, quarry/klinker, or porcelain/fully vitrified.  Wall tile types include glazed, glazed vitrified, natural stone products, and mosaics.  Aspects to consider when choosing and specifying tiles and tiling systems are addressed.
