Although self-cleaning glass has been developed and tested in Europe and the USA it has yet to make an impact in Asia. However, that is about to change as Asian companies are eager to introduce the technology. It is anticipated that expansion in the US and European flat glass markets will significantly increase the consumption of architectural glass, and hence self-cleaning glass, in Asia. Self-cleaning glass is coated with titania during the manufacturing process and many major global producers have their own registered products. Titania is activated by ultraviolet light causing it to react chemically with dirt by breaking down the organic molecules. Sunlight thus oxidises the dirt particles and loosens their grip on the glass surface. The latest technological and commercial developments in the USA, France, China and Australia are discussed, and the latest products described.
