Whole Wall Rating/Label for Structural Insulated Panels: Steady-State Thermal Analysis

Facilities were developed to determine the thermal conductivity of whole structural insulated panels ( SIPs ) to enable an accurate prediction of the panel behaviour in service.

The panels consisted of outer layers of oriented strandboards with a core of expanded polystyrene ( 89 or 140 mm thickness ). Guarded hot-box testing was used to measure of the thermal conductivity in areas of the wall free of thermal anomalies caused by sub-surface components or intersections with other building surfaces ( "clear wall" ).

Computer finite difference calculations were then used to determine local R-values for all typical wall interface details and the whole wall, with and without plasterboard facing. Results were compared with those from conventional wood stud walling.

The SIP wall out-performed 50 x 100 mm wood frame walls by more than R-4, whilst the 50 x 150 mm clear wall performance exceeded that of the SIP by about R-1.2. The addition of exterior wood cladding and interior plasterboard to SIP gave values about 8.2% lower than the clear wall R-value, and it was concluded that the SIP wall system was thermally very well designed. 5 refs.
