Design and detailing of hard surfacing

Summary

This symposium paper (123 Kb PDF) is based on over 20 years of looking at problems and trying to resolve them effectively. We are all learning and, hopefully, this paper will avoid many of the pitfalls experienced by others.

It is said that we learn by mistakes and also learn by things that do not perform as well as we expected. When we construct our pavements we use current practice and historical information - the Tower of Pisa would not be leaning if we had understood foundation design.

The British Standards for Clay Pavers BS66771, Concrete Block Paving BS67172 and Precast Flags and Kerbs BS72633 give basic information on the product requirement and methods of construction for these products. This paper gives more detail than the standards with many ideas to minimise the risk of failure of the construction.
