It is proposed that more spacious flats could be built than those complying with the recommendations of the Building Regulations Approved Document B if the presence of fire safety devices were considered when assessing building fire safety. The proposal is justified by comparing fire deaths in the UK with those in US where such devices are used, and more spacious dwellings are commonplace ( 11.1 and 13.1 deaths per million of the population, respectively ). The devices include horizontally- and vertically-mounted sprinklers, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. It is also suggested that sprinklers cause less damage than hoses, because they deliver water at lower rates. 6 refs.
