Cause for alarm – asbestos warning

As many as 30 million homes in the US may have vermiculite loft insulation which contains asbestos, supplied under the brand name Zonolite. This has financial implications for both homeowners planning home improvements, and for builders who demolish old properties and rebuild on the site. The Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) has issued a best practices document, and estimates the cost of removal from the average home to be $35,000. Several lawsuits are pending and a science trial involving the supplier, WR Grace, is scheduled for February, 2004.
