Proprietary nosings for non-domestic stairs

Guidance is given to building designers and managers on the assessment of proprietary nosings for use on non-domestic stairs when a possible slipping risk has been assessed. With goings of less than 300 mm the possibility of a large overstep occurring and the user's foot overhanging the nosings increases significantly, and tables are provided to predict the average time between occurrences of a large overstep based upon levels of use and going dimensions. Dimensional variability between steps is discussed, and advice given on the choice of nosing shape and material to be used to reduce the risk of slipping. 3 refs.
