Question of standards – clay brick and pavers

Summary

The new clay brick and paver product standards being introduced to the UK are outlined.  The standards are all "Euronorms" and will provide common EU-wide standards for bricks and pavers to support the development of a single European market in construction products. Details are given of the new clay brick product standard, BS EN 771: Part 1: 2003 (supersedes BS 3921: 1985); other brick product standards; the new paver product standard, BS EN 1344: 2002 (supersedes BS 6677: Part 1: 1986); the timescale to change;  and CE-marking of products.  Implications for change, and related masonry product standards, are discussed.  The BDA can offer guidance on these changes through its website at www.brick.org.uk.
