Project Overview

A residential development in an 18-storey tower block shaped on different levels to look like a ship. The development combines leisure and retail facilities with two, three and four-bedroom homes.

Technologies

This fast-track construction scheme comprised a lightweight structure surmounted by the M.R. Swistherm lightweight external wall insulation system from Alumasc Exterior Building Products Ltd, which was quick and easy to install.

The system incorporated 60 mm thick high density mineral wool fixed directly to the substrate with mechanical fixings and adhesive, and finished with a high performance silicone resin decorative render, durable and weatherproof. An excellent thermal value of 0.3W/m2K was achieved, together with superior acoustic performance, vital due to the proximity of the City airport.

The specifier, Barratts, East London, also required a distinctive colour-fast finish, achieved with high quality silicone resin decorative render with colourfast UV resistant pigments.

Review and Comment

Tradewinds was runner-up in the residential category of the Andy Swan New Build Award 2004, sponsored by the Insulated Render and Cladding Association, for the best use of external wall insulation.
