A model for the prediction of the lateral pressure exerted on formwork by self-compacting concrete was developed using Janssen's model and the results compared with experimental observations. The under-estimation of pressure by the original Janssen model was attributed to over-estimation of internal friction and friction on the walls. This was addressed in the modified model, and an instrument was constructed for the measurement of wall friction. Good agreement was obtained between the model pressure predictions and on-site measurements for concrete placed in 12 m high formwork by three companies, using pouring or pumping techniques. 21 refs.
