Better buildings

The Building Research Establishment has introduced the latest version of its environmental labelling scheme for buildings - BREEAM Offices 2004. To qualify, buildings must not adversely affect the surrounding biodiversity, and the impact of the construction site on the surroundings is assessed, either by their Considerate Constructors Scheme, or a recognised equivalent. CO2 emissions are evaluated from the building's energy consumption. Credits are given for: the use of timber from sustainable sources; laying minimal flooring until the final finish is specified by the tenant; reduced boiler NOx emissions; and the use of locally produced zero-emission energy sources.
