EC2 and BS 8110 compared – design of concrete structures

Summary

Eurocode 2: Design of Concrete Structures is compared with BS 8110, which it will be replacing in a few years time. Issues compared include: the design flexural elements at the ultimate limit state; allowable span:depth ratios; beam shear; the design of compression elements at the ultimate limit state; limits of slenderness ratio; biaxial bending; and punching shear comparisons of flat slabs. The design results for a whole building were similar under both standards. It is concluded that EC2 is less prescriptive and has a more extensive scope by permitting for example higher concrete strengths. This will allow designs currently not permitted in the UK. 5 refs.
