Adhesively bonded facing brick leaves: rationalisation of the construction method with ...

Summary

Restrictive requirements for the construction of facing brick leaves in Germany could be overcome by changing to a construction method where bricks are bonded with appropriate  adhesive or thin-layer mortars.  This method offers considerable cost savings.  An attempt was made to document the state-of-the-art based on current literature and completed construction projects.  It was shown that the new method not only rationalises current methods but also improves the properties of the brickwork.  Further research should allay the justified reservations of the German construction approval authorities.  How far the properties of the brickwork can be improved depends on the properties of individual building materials.  Overall requirements which the brickwork must satisfy are noted.
