Sky's the limit for ready-mixed concrete

Summary

Glenium Sky, a mixture of polycarboxylates, has been introduced by Degussa Construction Chemicals to maintain consistence in ready-mixed concrete. This eliminates the requirement to add water to compensate for the adverse effects of transport and the time lapse between batching and placing. The polycarboxylates extend the period of crystallisation, giving consistence retention and accelerated strength development. Use of this additive can typically reduce the water content of the concrete by 20 l/m3, and the cement content by 30-45 kg/m3, compared with previously used polycarboxylate-based additives. 4 refs.
