Standards writing with a purpose

ASTM Committee C11 on Gypsum and Related Building Materials and Systems is responsible for 46 standards governing gypsum board ( drywall ), gypsum plaster, light gauge steel framing, metal lath, and some aspects of Portland cement plaster and exterior finishes. The committee has a policy of only developing standards which have broad industrial application, and actively promotes the use of the standards in the construction industry. To this end, most current C11 standards are referenced in the building codes. The standards have to be balanced, as the products which they cover are often competitors in the marketplace. The standards are used by manufacturers, specifiers, purchasers and contractors, and by code officials. This is illustrated using gypsum board as an example.
