Alerta

Alerta - How it Works

Alerta is a Hi-Tech system that has been precisely designed for monitoring and reporting on the performance of a whole range of equipment remotely and accurately. The Alerta system is particularly useful for monitoring the non-stop performance of any moving parts in an engineered product, or for tracing the movements within a controlled environment (example, train stations, airports, materials handling, automotive processes, shopping malls, food and industrial processes).

Universal Adaptor Box (UAB) produces the core of the Alerta system and it comprises of a software system capable of being custom-made for use in monitoring all types of moving parts in any engineered product from trains and airplanes through to electrically generated plants and escalators. The Alerta system makes use of any number of applicable monitoring sensors in order to collect data, which is then instantly transmitted by Wi-Fi to control rooms, laptops, computers, mobile phones, monitoring points and tablets.

The goals of the Alerta System infrastructure include capturing all in-bound events, storing them locally for redundancy and transmitting events to the cloud. After the events are pushed to the cloud environment, they are then processed in real time with the data being made available to customers.

The following figure provides an outline of the Alerta onsite system. The sensors transfer data on an event via radio frequency (RF) to local AP (receiver); the APs always listen to these events. The data logger (DL) continuously monitors the receivers for any incoming events. This is followed by the events being logged on the MP and then pushed to the cloud through a SSL secured rest API.

H3S provides two main options of internet service in order to transmit the events from the DL to the cloud:

  • Broadband connection (preferred)
  • Mobile 3G/4G router

In deep stations that lack 3G/4G connectivity, H3S employs signal boosters between the RF receivers and the data logger.

Using the help of the Alerta system, sensor data can be securely transferred to the cloud gateway (web rest API) in real time. The APIs are SSL secured and all data is encrypted at a minimum of 256 bits. For example:

The information is temporarily stored by the event message broker, which then determines the ideal routes to push the data through to the transformation stage. The types of transformations are:

  • Batch Processing – automated ETL jobs are developed in order to produce aggregate results
  • Real Time Analytics – offers real time monitoring of incoming sensor events
  • Storage Adapters – provides secured storage of event data and introduces the appropriate flow through to file and/or database storage

From the transformation stage, the data consequently moves to the presentation and action category where it is correlated for viewing by the client.

  • O&M documentation of the assets to be monitored
  • Free wall space for installation of Alerta System transmitters and cabinets
  • Planning site visit
  • Building general arrangement drawings
  • LAN connection or WiFi with an open port to provide external transmission to the Alerta servers
  • 240 volt ac fused un-switched spur local to each unit installed

Technical Specification

  • Power consumption is minimal
  • Operating Voltage +5 vdc - +24 vdc with a Supply Voltage of 110 vac – 240 vac
  • Radio frequency employed is 868 MHz which covers Europe and UK, 315 MHz, 433 MHz and 915 MHz are available to cover territories beyond Europe
  • WiFi /LAN for data transmission to the Internet to allow the client to access the monitoring application. Dimensions of control panel are typically 300 mm x 300 mm x 200 mm, generally the data harvester and communication link are installed into available asset control panels

A few types of sensors available are shown above, and all sensors have been specifically obtained in order to monitor the equipment of the client and meet site-specific requirements.
