Acuity Brands, a market leader in innovative energy efficient lighting and control solutions, is proud to support San Diego State University's first LED lighting project. The centerpiece of this installation is a new 215-person lecture hall equipped with the Lithonia Lighting(R) RTLED(TM) luminaire, the LED version of its highly successful RT5 products.
This integrated LED lighting and controls project is aligned with the university's long-term objectives for sustainability, reduced energy consumption and reduced lifecycle costs, while maintaining a high quality of light output.
First introduced in May 2010 and now available nationally, the RTLED is a high-quality, volumetric recessed luminaire that delivers ambient white light uniformly throughout an entire space while reducing energy and maintenance costs and a building's environmental footprint. Powered by an advanced LED light engine, the RTLED delivers an expected 50,000 hour system life and a superior lighting environment: high color rendering (80+ CRI), 3500K color temperature, and full range dimming with 0-10V DC control. "The patented optical system integrates LED brightness while maintaining maximum light output and effectively balancing visual comfort and efficiency," said Dave Ranieri, Vice President and General Manager, Lithonia Lighting Commercial Indoor Products.
San Diego State University Architect Jeffrey Herr recommended the Acuity Brands lighting solution for the university's first major LED lighting project. "LED based lighting solutions meet or exceed sustainability goals and have become a mainstream way to enable ambient and general illumination lighting solutions. I was confident in the technology and the breadth of the Acuity Brands total lighting solution that, in the long-run, will save the university money," said Herr.
San Diego State University installed Lithonia Lighting RTLED luminaires and DoM(TM) recessed LED downlights for general ambient lighting. To maximize the effectiveness of the LED lighting installation, the university specified the Acuity Brands nLight(TM) lighting control system by SensorSwitch(R), which enables local control of the lecture hall's entire lighting system.
Even with high expectations for the LED lighting solution, Herr admits he was impressed the first time the lecture hall was lit with the new Lithonia Lighting RTLED system. "The first day we turned on the lights 100 percent, we were all awed that such an energy efficient solution could uniformly illuminate the entire lecture hall with such a high quality of light."
