Structal-Heavy Steel Construction to Build a Multisports Stadium in Manitoba, Canada

Structal-Heavy Steel Construction, a business unit of Canam Group Inc. (TSX: CAM), located in Boucherville, Quebec, has secured a contract worth more than $44 million from Stuart Olson Dominion Construction Ltd., a business unit of Churchill Corporation (TSX: CUQ), for the construction of a new multisports stadium in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The contract awarded to Structal includes design-build, detailing, business information modeling (BIM) and project management services as well as the fabrication and erection of the steel components. Construction of this stadium is expected to cost in the vicinity of $190 million.

Luc Pelland, senior vice-president of Structal-Heavy Steel Construction, is delighted to be partnering with Stuart Olson Dominion on the construction of this new Winnipeg stadium. "As a contractor specialized in the field of structural steel, we have demonstrated our expertise in integrating all the phases of a project to successfully meet all customer requirements," says Pelland. This construction project, he adds, will bring to 68 the number of North American sports facilities Canam Group and its business units have collaborated on over the years, 21 of which are home to Major League teams.

Fabrication of the steel components will take place in the Canam Group plants located in St. Gédéon de Beauce, Quebec, and Calgary, Alberta. Deliveries and field erection are slated to begin in late March 2011 and to be completed during the second quarter of 2012.

The new state-of-the-art stadium with a capacity for 33,000 spectators will be home to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League and the Manitoba Bisons, the University of Manitoba football team considered to be one of the finest on the university circuit.

Over the years, Canam Group and Structal have been associated with many other stadium and arena construction projects for Major League teams, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Florida Marlins, the New York Yankees, Mets, Giants, Jets and Red Bulls, the British Columbia Lions, the New England Patriots, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
