Premier BOMA Environmental Rating Presented to Minto's 180 Kent Street

The renowned 180 Kent Street office tower of Minto is distinguished as Ottawa’s only premier construction to win the Building Environmental Standards (BESt) Level 4 certification, the supreme level of recognition for excellent environmental performance in the commercial building industry from the Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada (BOMA).

Established in 2005, the BOMA BESt certification program validates commercial building operations in terms of water conservation, preventative maintenance, energy reduction, air quality, waste recovery, heat recovery, tenant relations and environmental plans. Evaluation of buildings was based on the efficient execution of various key strategies. Assessment on the building resulted in achieving over 90% of standards that contributed to the esteemed Level 4 rating.

The Director of Property Operations for 180 Kent Street, Oryst Deneka says that being the recipient of this prestigious rating resulted from the highest standards of operation and maintenance along with increased energy-efficiency, besides having a well-developed construction.

Established in 2009, 180 Kent Street facility is a green office tower with extensive innovative features such as green roof and heat recovery units, and a rainwater harvesting system. This totally leased facility accommodates retail, restaurant, government and financial services. Unlike the national energy code for buildings (MNECB) depict commercial tower, the 180 Kent Street office facility is more energy-efficient with 52% of energy conservation and 55 % water savings in 2010. Last year, it was estimated to eliminate about 825 t of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG's), and is now working to achieve LEED Platinum certification.

Being recognized with several awards for environmental achievements during 2011, the Minto Group serves to be Canada’s renowned green home builders.
