HydroGuard, an affordable, reusable flood protection system, will launch a campaign on the crowdfunding website Indiegogo on September 17. The campaign hopes to raise £50,000 (≈$84,000) for the product's mass production and global distribution.
HydroGuard is a compact flood protection system that uses an intelligent sliding system to adjust to fit any doorway and efficiently keep out rising flood waters.
Unlike other flood protection systems, HydroGuard is able to attach to any doorway without making any permanent alterations to the property. Alternative flood protection systems only fit certain door sizes and require making changes to the property in order to protect the house. HydroGuard's quick and easy installation means it can be installed in minutes and then cleanly removed after flooding and stored until the next use. Because HydroGuard is reusable, it also offers an affordable solution to protect all homes.
"After being a victim of flooding, not once but twice, I was fed up with the inefficient systems available to protect my home," said Hannes Floto, designer of HydroGuard. "It seemed obvious to me that there should be a reusable, adjustable system that would fit into any doorway and seal out flood waters. So, after two years and several prototypes, HydroGuard is ready to protect houses of the world from floods."
HydroGuard creates a sealed barrier across any door and works better than traditional sandbags, which are not reusable due to hygiene issues. Throughout the world, people pile sandbags in front of their doorways to ward off floodwaters. However, sandbags fail to create a waterproof seal to prevent floodwaters from entering homes. HydroGuard creates an instant protective seal against water and debris. It can also be easily removed in the case of an emergency exit from the property.
Other flood protection systems include multiple pieces, complicated measurements and lots of assembly. HydroGuard is a one size fits all, single unit that expands to clip into any standard door frame. When HydroGuard is not needed, it can be collapsed into a manageable size and stored until its next use.
HydroGuard will begin their Indiegogo campaign September 17. Donations begin at just £1 and for £180 (≈$300), funders can ensure they receive their own HydroGuard to protect their homes from floods. ABOUT HYDROGUARD
The idea for HydroGuard came to Hannes Floto after two of his houses fell victim to floods. The two houses, one in Maryland, America and the other in Athens, Greece, were both settled in regions not prone to flooding. After suffering extensive damages from small floods, Floto decided he would invent a way to protect all future houses from floodwaters. With the help of James Browne and with the professionals of Studio17, Floto managed to come up with a product which met all of his requirements, while still maintaining a simple, streamlined design.
