The W. H. Sammis Air Quality Control Project, for which Bechtel provided engineering, procurement, construction and startup services, was named Construction Project of the Year at the 2010 Platts Global Energy Awards. The award was presented in New York on December 2.
Bechtel, in conjunction with Babcock & Wilcox and Stantec Consulting Services, retrofitted the air quality system at the W.H. Sammis power plant in Stratton, Ohio. The state-of-the-art upgrade will dramatically reduce gas emissions for the 2,220-megawatt, coal-fired power generating facility, which is owned by FirstEnergy.
”Construction of this project was thought to be impossible by some in the industry because of its scope and complexity, which were compounded by the confined work area and necessity to maintain normal plant generation operations during construction,” said Robert Kasper, Bechtel’s project director. “The quality and safety of the project is a testament to all of the people who were involved, and this award is for them.”
The collaboration and dedication of everyone involved proved critical to completing the project on time and under budget. In particular, the support of the local trade unions and key suppliers Dynasteel Corporation, PSP Industries, Prospect Steel, Howden Variax Incorporated, Pullman Power Company, and Dearborn Midwest Conveying Company were instrumental in the project’s success.
The Platts Global Energy Awards are among the most coveted in the industry. They recognize people and projects that demonstrate excellence, leadership, innovation, and performance.
