Canada Post Selects Bird Design-Build Construction to Build Processing Facility

Bird Design-Build Construction has been chosen by Canada Post to design and construct its processing facility at the Vancouver International Airport located in Richmond, British Columbia.

Canada Post selected Bird Design-Build Construction through a competitive request for the proposal process. It has signed a long-term lease with the Vancouver Airport Authority for the 42-acre site at the airport. Canada Post invests $200 million in the new postal facility and associated equipment.

The start of the construction of the multi-purpose processing facility spanning 700,000 sq ft is slated for 2011 fall and is anticipated to begin operations in 2014. The facility will process advertising mail, packets, parcels and letters under one roof. The new postal facility will be constructed as per the specifications of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

Canada Post's strategic decision to construct a processing facility at the Vancouver International Airport will enhance its accessibility to important transportation channels and develop its eCommerce business, enhance its delivery logistics, process the mails quickly and offer superior customer service.

Vancouver is accountable for postal delivery in the Yukon and British Columbia and represents 10% of the mail volumes in Canada. Vancouver is a strategic location to Canada Post's operations as it is an important part of its western operations and is an entry to Asia-Pacific. In addition to its international responsibility, the new facility will accommodate an operation of Canada Border Services Agency to offer better services to western Canadians.
