Arborlight and Duo-Gard Partner to Develop LED Lighting Integration Techniques

Lighting developers, Arborlight will partner with Duo-Gard, which specialises in translucent daylighting systems and architectural illumination, for the development of LED lighting integration techniques to lighten architectural panels, walls, ceilings and other architectural materials at lower costs, higher energy efficiency and custom made aesthetics.

The partnership is being funded partially by the commercialisation programme of the University of Michigan. The initial products are currently in prototype stage. The new lighting technology developed by Arborlight reduces the space between the lighting and the translucent panels, walls and canopies by a great amount and thus reduces a distance of only 2”.

The panel lighting and the translucent materials will provide diffused day lighting and backlit illumination during the night. This technology from Arborlight will also help Duo-Gard in enhancing its illumaWALL line of lighting, which is in the plug and play model and is a colour changing system. Though the illumaWALL line from Duo-Gard received the Top Product award in 2006 from the Architectural Record and Buildings Magazine, the great challenge was to reduce the four inch distance between the lighting and the walls. This challenge will be solved through the partnership with Arborlight.

According to the CEO of Arborlight, Michael Forbis, since both the companies are based in Michigan and are greatly involved in clean technology and enhancing sustainability, the partnership will help in integrating technologies from both companies and at the same provide a wide range of LED products that will satisfy customers. He also added that the growing requirement for environment sustainability will result in the growth of integrating systems that harvest natural daylight. Both the companies intend to develop other technologies in functional lighting and architectural lighting in the future.
