New Building in John Hopkins Hospital to be Artistically Upgraded
A team consisting of a curator, artists and architects in collaboration with Johns Hopkins are adding an artistic touch to the new building of John Hopkins Hospital.
The exterior curtain wall (about 250,000 sq. feet) by artist Spencer Finch is the largest work of art at the new Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children's Center at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Over 70 artists, a curator, and architects incorporated more than 500 works of art into the new Johns Hopkins Hospital building in a unique art and architecture collaboration. Photo (C) Paul Warchol
The new building will feature over 500 works of art from 70 or more different artists. While John Hopkins will contribute with its own team, teams from architectural firm Perkins + Will, landscape artists from OLIN, curator Nancy Rosen and consultant architect Allen Kolkowitz will contribute their expertise towards the renovation of the building.
Major features of the new building will include a large sized shimmering wall of glass and steel created by artist Spencer Finch which will cover the building over an area of 1.5 million sq.ft. This steel and glass wall will make the building appear like a snow globe and a bright lantern. The building will include 11 large sized sculptures created by designer Robert Israel. It will also feature window shades with pictures, 300 artworks inspired by beloved children books, 200 works of art inspired by the garden and nature and a unique canopy that includes both normal and emergency doors. The furniture in the reception of the building will be integrated with the art work. The building will also include the Sheikh Zayed Tower for adult care. The tower has been named after the Founder and President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The new building will house The Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Centre, which has been named after the mother of the Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg.
