Heartpine’s Wood Used in Green Renovation

The Gainesville Community Redevelopment Agency is collaborating with popular companies and is a well known architect for green redevelopment of the Gainesville Depot, which is one of the oldest buildings in Gainesville.

The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The renovation project is being carried out in collaboration with Bert Bender from Bender and Associates Architects who is very popular for his works including the Custom House. The project is being headed by Coley Pitt who is the Superintendent of West Construction.

Reclaimed heart pine wood from Goodwin Heart Pine Company has been used for the construction of the green building. Other recylable materials that were used for the construction included copper gutters and downspouts from CopperWorx. The doors, milwork and the windows were provided by Williston Door & Milwork. The building is already eligible for LEED Gold Certification and will soon be nominated for LEED Platinum certification. Green features of the Gainesville Depot include a dual plumbing system to utlise reclaimed water, sheet insulation in the attic and a dual radiant barrier foam. An effective waste management and recycling program has also been implemented as part of the green features of the building. Carol Goodwin, MCR, President of Goodwin Heart Pine Company hopes Gainesville Depot’s green building project model is used in other historic rehabiliation projects across the country.
