Construction Industry Diversity Conference to be Held on October 1, 2010

The Construction Roundtable of New Jersey (CRTNJ) announced today that Garry Maddox, the former Philadelphia Phillies star outfielder, will be the keynote speaker at a conference on Construction Industry Diversity set for Oct. 1 at Merck's Corporate Headquarters in Whitehouse.

Maddox is currently the owner and CEO of A. Pomerantz & Company, a Philadelphia based office furniture company.

The conference will bring together leaders of the major industrial firms, including Merck, Novartis, Pfizer, Sanofi-Aventis and Anheuser-Busch along with well-known construction firms such as Skanska, Jacobs, Turner, Torcon and Furino. The goal of the conference is to attract diverse sub-contractors who are willing to partner with the larger firms.

Ms. Jackie Le Joie of Merck Global Procurement told a recent meeting of the Construction Roundtable that the current requirements for diversity in procuring practices has affected not only construction contractors, but everything that a large company purchases. If a company wants to do business with the government then they must implement a plan to seek out diverse firms.

Maddox will inspire the conference with his own example of partnering and building his business.

"Our mission is to understand the diversity requirements and suggest options for our members," said Connie DesRochers, Executive Director of CRTNJ. "If we comprehend the reasons behind these business decisions our construction members can learn how to help meet these goals."
