Thiess McConnel Dowell JV Bags Transport Infrastructure Project in South Australia

The Thiess McConnel Dowell Joint Venture has been awarded the contract to build South Australia’s vital rail link connecting Seaford to Adelaide.

This critical SA government transport project has a total value of $291million.

This important piece of transport infrastructure will serve the region’s growing population.

Thiess Managing Director David Saxelby said the Seaford Rail Extension Project contract win was testament to the company’s national rail capabilities and strengthened Thiess’ market position in the sector.

“This builds on our 46 year history in the State and we are excited about the opportunity to deliver a project of state significance for the benefit of South Australians,” he said.

“We take a rail system approach to our planning and with an in-house integrated team we offer greater productivity, improved rail safety and value for our clients.”

Key features of the Seaford Rail Extension include:

  • A new electrified passenger railway and 5.5 kilometre extension of the dual track rail line from Noarlunga to the Seaford District Centre;
  • Stations and park ‘n’ ride facilities at Seaford Meadows and the Seaford District Centre;
  • A bus interchange at the Seaford District Centre;
  • A 1.2 kilometre elevated rail bridge over the Onkaparinga Valley;
  • A rail bridge over Old Honeypot Drive; and
  • Road bridges over the track at Goldsmith Drive, Seaford Road and Lynton Terrace.

Thiess’ General Manager for South Australia Gordon Taylor said the company was ideally placed to deliver the project which will provide greater transport flexibility for the community well into the future.

“With an additional 9000 residences to be built in southern Adelaide by 2025, the demand on public transport services is expected to significantly increase,” he said.

“The extension of passenger rail services to the growing population centre of Seaford will help to meet this need.
“The Thiess McConnell Dowell Joint Venture will now begin the major construction works, with the new line scheduled for passenger operation in 2013.”

Earlier this year, a Thiess joint venture successfully completed the Coast to Coast Light Rail Project, which extended South Australia’s tram network by 2.8 kilometres from Adelaide city centre through to the Entertainment Centre.

Thiess Pty Ltd is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Leighton Holdings Limited.
