The Siemens Industry Solutions Division is supplying the complete technical infrastructure for a new tunnel project in Italy. The order is worth more than 22 million euros.
The customer is Grandi Lavori Fincosit SpA, an important Italian building contractor based in Rome. It is constructing a tunnel system on the A3 3° Macrolotto Highway for Azienda Nazionale Autonoma delle Strade (ANAS S.p.A. - the national independent road operating company). The contribution of Siemens to the project comprises the traffic control systems, power supply, lighting, ventilation, and the communication and camera surveillance equipment.
The A3 freeway runs from Salerno in the Campania region to Reggio di Calabria in Calabria in the South of Italy. It is also the main road link to Rome and Southern Italy. In the course of extensive modernization work, a new tunnel system – consisting of four natural and two artificial tunnels of over ten kilometers in length – is being built in the urban area of Lauria, Potenza. The freeway tunnel will be operated by the national independent road operating company, which runs a 25,420 kilometer road and freeway network in Italy.
Siemens is responsible for planning, installing and commissioning all the electrical systems in the tunnel. These include the power supply and distribution, together with the associated medium and low-voltage substations. Emergency generators, transformers and an uninterruptible power supply are provided to ensure continuous operation. The scope of delivery also includes the lighting, ventilation and closed-circuit television camera surveillance equipment. The traffic management system displays safety information and warnings on variable message signs for the benefit of drivers. The project is rounded off by the tunnel communication equipment and an automation system which is connected to the ventilation, lighting, and traffic control and safety systems to ensure that they all function promptly and reliably, even in the event of fire.
The main reason for winning this order was the good relationship with this customers and the previous experience of Siemens on other tunnel construction projects in Italy, such as with the provision of the equipment for the Grande Viabilità Trieste Tunnel in 2007.
