SDTC Contributes $2.4 Million to SWITCH Materials for Developing Smart Window Solutions

SWITCH Materials Inc., an advanced materials company developing energy saving SMART window solutions, is pleased to announce a $2.4 million (CDN) contribution from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC).

The funding will support a project that will showcase the company’s cutting-edge clean technology product in demonstration building sites in and around Vancouver, BC.

SMART window solutions

SWTICH Materials is developing a smart window solution for architectural and automotive applications. Using its patented technology, SWITCH delivers an innovative variable transmission film that dynamically provides protection from heat, glare and UV, thereby reducing energy costs while allowing users to control and maximize natural lighting conditions. SDTC will provide funding towards commercialization by scaling up the company’s manufacturing capabilities and performing real-world demonstrations of its products, establishing performance metrics obtained from actual installations and proving the viability of the technology for customers and end users.

“Commercial and residential buildings in Canada are responsible for over 30% of total electricity usage, and are a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions,” said SDTC President and CEO Vicky Sharpe. “Technologies such as the one developed by SWITCH are crucial because they will allow building operators and occupants alike to reduce their environmental footprint, while at the same time reducing their energy costs.”

“Our Government is committed to supporting clean energy technology in Canada as an effective measure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create high-quality jobs for Canadians,” said Mark Warawa, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Environment and Member of Parliament for Langley. “This project is an example of our leadership in driving technology innovation to help create a viable clean energy industry in Canada.”

“SWITCH is extremely pleased to have the support of SDTC in the further development of our unique solution for energy saving smart window technology,” remarked Doug Wiggin, SWITCH’s CEO. “The demonstration project will provide valuable qualitative and quantitative feedback that will accelerate the commercialization of our product suite. The installations and associated data collection will assist in validating the performance of SWITCH’s smart window in real world use.”
