Acciona to Build Shipyard in Brazil’s Açu Port Complex Using Caisson System

Acciona has received a contract from the LLX-OSX companies for a project worth over €400 million. According to the terms of the contract, Acciona will design, engineer and construct the breakwaters for a shipyard located in Brazil’s São João da Barra. Once completed, it will be the largest shipyard in Latin America.

Acciona will use the caisson construction technology for the breakwaters. Acciona will manufacture large concrete blocks on the Kugira floating dock. About 3.8 km of breakwater will be constructed for the project of which 2.8 km will be artificially built using the concrete blocks. Acciona has used these large concrete blocks of dimension 66 X24 X21 in the past port projects in El Ferrol, Tarragona, Algeciras and Escombreras. The caisson system improves the quality of execution due to its prefabrication.

The shipyard will be a part of the Açu super-port. It is a project funded by the EBX group of companies. Açu will have two port terminals, viz., TX1 with a 3 km- long access bridge and the TX2 with docks stretched across 14 km docks. The port terminals will provide the best access available to large sized cargo vessels.
