Distribution Centre of CVS/Pharmacy Receives LEED Certification

Gray Construction and CVS/pharmacy have declared that the distribution center of CVS/pharmacy in Chemung County, New York has received the leadership in energy and environmental design (LEED) Gold certification. The building and design of the distribution center was done by Gray Construction, a design-build firm.

Construction projects that aim for LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) are assessed based on their usage of measurable and practical green building construction, design, maintenance and operations solutions. LEED supports sustainable development and construction practices using a wide range of rating methods that identify projects, which use strategies for improved health and environmental performance.

CVS/pharmacy's Chemung facility is the first distribution center of the company to receive the LEED certification. As the facility area is 751,000 sq. ft, it is the largest industrial building in New York State to receive Gold level LEED certification.

Sustainable design features that have been integrated into the new distribution facility include exterior and interior lighting with timers and daylight sensors, white, energy-efficient PVC insulated roof, low-flow and increased efficiency plumbing fixtures, fluorescent skylights and fixtures, rainwater harvesting system for irrigation and construction done utilizing recycled and local materials.

Senior Vice President of Supply Chain and Logistics, Ron Link at CVS/pharmacy stated that the company was focused on contributing healthy conditions in all business areas and is extremely proud that the new Chemung distribution center received the LEED Gold certification. Gray has a wide range of customers all over the US and has been building and designing based on LEED standards for many years.

The opening of the Chemung distribution centre was done in June 2011 and will support the requirements of around 350 CVS/pharmacy stores in the northeast.
